Foreign Investors Dump NT$112.5 Billion as TAIEX Sinks 1,156 Points, Capping a 2,728-Point October Slide

Friday, October 30, 2026 Data: US close Oct 29 · Taiwan close Oct 30

The Takeaway

AI doubts, foreign exodus

Alphabet plunged 12.64% and pulled the Nasdaq down 1.38%. Amazon and Intel then fell sharply after hours, and investors began asking when Big Tech's massive AI spending will pay off. Taiwan's TAIEX sank 1,156 points and broke below its 120-day average as foreign investors sold a net NT$112.47 billion, the seventh-largest single-day foreign outflow on record. On the last trading day of October the index closed at 45,211.83, down 2,728 points (−5.69%) for the month, while the OTC index lost more than 11%. With the US midterms next Tuesday, the jobs report next Friday, and foreign investors adding to short futures positions, volatility could stay high in the near term.

MarketCloseChangeNote
S&P 5007,720.39 pts−0.30%Snapped a three-day winning streak. The equal-weight S&P 500 ETF (RSP) rose about 1.2%, so most stocks actually gained; a handful of megacap tech names pulled the index down.
Nasdaq Composite26,184.72 pts−1.38%The weakest of the three major indexes. Alphabet missed on earnings and posted negative quarterly free cash flow, and its 12.64% drop was the main drag.
Dow Jones Industrials52,342.56 pts−0.25%The 30-stock blue-chip index has less tech exposure, so it fell less. Health care was strong, and the sector index closed at an all-time high.
PHLX Semiconductor11,518.20 pts−1.42%Gave back most of the previous day's 1.75% SK Hynix-driven gain. The SOX is a key overnight signal for TSMC and other Taiwan chip stocks, and Taiwan followed it lower today.
VIX17.20 pts+1.71%Measures expected stock-market volatility over the next 30 days. It edged up but stayed below 20, so the broader US market is not panicking; the selling was concentrated in tech.
10-Year Treasury4.98%−7 bpSlipped back below 5% a day after rising to 5.04%. Some money moved from falling tech stocks into Treasurys as a safe haven, pushing yields down.
WTI CrudeUS$102.00/bbl−0.76%Still above $100, with Brent near US$114.88. Iran said its "seven-day plan" could be shortened, giving markets a little hope on diplomacy, and oil eased.

At the call, MediaTek reported third-quarter EPS of NT$17.50 (NT$15.28 the previous quarter) and guided fourth-quarter revenue up 25% to 32% from the third quarter, but these results came after the close and are not yet reflected in the price. Foreign investors sold 11,000 lots and investment trusts 473. Volume of 23,000 lots was the second-heaviest of October. Down about 13.9% in two days, it closed at its lowest of October, about 35% below the Oct 6 high of NT$2,050.

Six Market Signals

TrendWeakening

Taiwan broke below its 120-day average and lost 2,728 points in October; the OTC index fell more than 11%. In the US, the S&P 500 ended a three-day winning streak and the Nasdaq fell 1.38% in a day.

Fund flowsForeign selling

Foreign investors sold a net NT$112.47 billion on Oct 30 and raised their net short position in TAIEX futures by 2,719 contracts to 92,241. Media tallies put October's net selling by the three major institutional groups near NT$1.2 trillion. Investment trusts bought for a 14th straight day.

RatesEasing a bit

The 10-year Treasury yield fell 7 bp to 4.98%. Markets still expect a Fed hike in December, so the relief on rates may be temporary.

ConcentrationHigh

Most US stocks rose, yet Alphabet dragged the index lower. In Taiwan, electronic components fell 6.46% while the non-electronics index fell only 0.93%, so the selling was concentrated in the AI supply chain.

GeopoliticsElevated

Iran said its "seven-day plan" to reopen the Strait of Hormuz could be shortened, but Washington denied that peace talks are underway. Crude remains above $100 a barrel.

InflationSticky

US September PCE rose 3.6% year over year and 0.5% month over month, the biggest monthly gain since March. Core PCE rose 3.1%, in line with forecasts.

US tech weakness triggers a NT$100-billion-plus foreign exodus

The TAIEX fell as much as 1,642 points intraday and closed down 1,156, below its 120-day average. The backdrop was US tech earnings that left investors worried AI spending is slow to pay off, and Intel's weak outlook also weighed on electronics. Foreign investors sold a net NT$112.47 billion while adding to short futures positions, a sign of caution about the near term. Investment trusts bought a net NT$23.99 billion against the tide.

Delta hits limit down; electronic components plunge

Delta Electronics fell the daily limit after its Thai subsidiary booked an inventory write-down and third-quarter gross margin slipped. The electronic components sector index dropped 6.46%. Circuit-board and laminate makers Elite Material, Gold Circuit, ITEQ and Kinsus fell sharply, as did passive-component makers Yageo and Walsin Technology, which hit limit down. These stocks had soared over the past year on AI server demand, so any doubt about profits brought especially heavy selling.

October tally: TAIEX down 2,728 points, shipping bucks the trend

The TAIEX ended September at 47,940.13, climbed to 49,822.55 on Oct 6, and finished October at 45,211.83, down 5.69% for the month; the OTC index fell 11.22%. Shipping was one of the few groups to rise today: Evergreen and Wan Hai gained more than 4% and Yang Ming more than 2%. Financials were roughly flat as money stepped away from AI-related stocks for now.

US and Global News

Alphabet plunges 12.64%, its worst day on record

Alphabet's results, released the night before, missed on both revenue and earnings, and quarterly free cash flow was negative $9.07 billion: spending on AI and data centers now exceeds the cash its businesses bring in. The stock fell 12.64%, dragging down the Nasdaq and the S&P 500. Health care, real estate and consumer staples rose instead, and the health care sector index hit an all-time high.

Amazon and Intel slide after hours: AWS strong, but cash flow turns negative

Amazon's AWS cloud revenue grew 39% to $45.98 billion, its fastest pace in nearly five years. But the company expects about $220 billion of capex this year and more next year, trailing 12-month free cash flow was negative $42.4 billion, and shares fell about 6% after hours. Intel beat on third-quarter earnings, but its fourth-quarter revenue outlook of $15 billion to $16 billion was weak and it cited softer PC demand; shares fell more than 16% after hours.

US Q3 GDP grows 3.4%; PCE inflation heats up

The economy grew at a 3.4% annualized rate in the third quarter, above the 3.1% forecast and up from 2.2% in the second quarter. PCE, the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, rose 3.6% year over year in September and 0.5% for the month, the biggest monthly gain since March; core PCE rose 3.1%. Strong growth plus elevated inflation strengthens the case for a December rate hike.

Middle East: Iran says its seven-day plan could be shortened; US denies talks

Iran's foreign minister said Tehran is still discussing, through intermediaries, its seven-day plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and that it could take less than a week. President Trump denied that peace talks are underway. The diplomatic headlines nudged oil lower, but WTI remains above $100 a barrel and supply risks have not gone away.

The US–Taiwan Link: AI Spending Keeps Rising, but Markets Want a Payback

US cloud giants did not cut AI spending this quarter: Amazon expects about $220 billion of capex this year and more next year. That money turns into orders for servers, chips, circuit boards and power supplies, many of them filled by Taiwanese companies. What changed is the market's focus. With free cash flow at Alphabet and Amazon turning negative, investors are asking when these investments will pay off. As long as that question hangs over the market, Taiwan's AI supply chain stocks are likely to swing with US tech, even while orders are still growing. Separately, Intel flagged weaker PC demand, which matters for Taiwan's PC brands and contract manufacturers; ASUS fell 4.63% today.
