Today's Takeaways

Chips rebound, TAIEX down 12% on the week

US chip stocks rebounded on Friday, Nov 6: the PHLX Semiconductor Index rose 4.21% to 9,390.25, recovering about 30% of the previous day's 12.25% drop. AMD gained 11.04%, Micron 5.12% and Nvidia 2.78%, and TSMC's ADR rose 6.33% to US$375.44. The Nasdaq rose 1.09% and the S&P 500 0.31%, while the Dow fell 237.36 points (−0.46%).

US October payrolls rose by 165,000, far above the forecast of 59,000; the unemployment rate fell from 4.2% to 4.1%, and hourly wages rose 3.1% from a year earlier. The strong data raised expectations of a December Fed hike: the 2-year Treasury yield rose 5 bp to 4.51%, the dollar index gained 0.72% and gold fell 0.83%.

For the week, US stocks swung sharply after the midterm elections: the Dow jumped 1,569 points on Wednesday and fell 1,833 on Thursday. The S&P 500 lost 2.68% and the Nasdaq 3.37% for the week, both their fourth straight weekly declines; the SOX fell 12.15%, its fifth straight weekly loss. Oil fell 13.23% for the week on hopes for US–Iran peace talks, with WTI closing at $90.34 a barrel.

Taiwan's market fell on all five days this week: the TAIEX dropped from 45,211.83 to 39,701.64, down 5,510.19 points (−12.19%) and below 40,000; the TPEx index fell 17.89%. Foreign investors sold a net NT$524.38B for the week and investment trusts bought NT$128.82B. On Nov 6 the Financial Supervisory Commission announced that from Nov 9 it will cut the daily cap on intraday securities-lending short sales from 30% to 3% and raise the short-sale margin ratio from 90% to 130%.

TAIEX futures closed Friday's night session at 40,298, up 646 points, about 596 points above the TAIEX's Nov 6 close; TSMC's converted ADR price is 16.45% above its Taiwan close. Taiwan's market is closed for the weekend and reopens Monday, Nov 9, at 9:00 AM Taipei time (8:00 PM ET Sunday); the US October CPI comes Tuesday, Nov 10, at 8:30 AM ET.

United States Close, Fri Nov 6

MarketCloseChangeNote
S&P 5007,376.86 pts+0.31%Up 23.13 points. A small rebound after the previous day's 4.36% drop, supported mainly by tech; but the much stronger-than-expected October jobs report pushed up Treasury yields and Fed hike expectations, limiting the gain. Down 2.68% for the week from 7,580.07, a fourth straight weekly decline; about 5.65% below its Oct 6 record high of 7,818.93.
Nasdaq Composite24,579.42 pts+1.09%Up 264.42 points as chip stocks led a rebound; QQQ, which tracks the Nasdaq-100, rose 1.40%. It recovered only a small part of the previous day's 5.52% drop and remains about 10.94% below its Oct 6 high of 27,599.79, still in a "correction" of more than 10%. Down 3.37% for the week, a fourth straight weekly decline.
Dow Jones Industrial Average51,285.70 pts−0.46%Down 237.36 points, the only one of the three main indexes to fall, and lower for a second day. No single reason was found; the Dow is weighted toward traditional industries and large caps with little chip exposure, so the day's chip rebound helped it little. It had the wildest week: up 1,569.40 points on Wednesday after the election and down 1,833.06 on Thursday, for a 0.94% weekly loss. About 5.64% below its Aug 5 record high of 54,349.12.
PHLX Semiconductor (SOX)9,390.25 pts+4.21%Up 379.11 points, recovering about 30% of the previous day's 1,257.51-point drop. Major chip stocks rebounded: AMD +11.04%, Intel +7.71%, Marvell +5.73%, Qualcomm +5.52%, Micron +5.12%, Arm +4.74%, Nvidia +2.78%, Broadcom +0.74%; Lam Research, which announced a $25 billion buyback the day before, rose 8.23%. Still down 12.15% for the week, a fifth straight weekly decline; Micron fell 22.01% and AMD 11.05% for the week. About 35.8% below its one-year high of 14,634.72 on Jun 22.
VIX25.64 pts−9.01%Measures expected stock market volatility over the next 30 days. Down 2.54 points from 28.18, a slight easing of nerves, but still above 20 and 32.03% above last Friday's 19.42, meaning markets still expect large swings.
10-year Treasury yield4.86%+2 bpAccording to the US Treasury, up from 4.84% to 4.86%; the 2-year rose 5 bp to 4.51%, as shorter maturities more sensitive to Fed policy rose more. The reason: October payrolls rose 165,000 and hourly wages 0.4% from the prior month, both above forecasts; according to CNBC, citing CME FedWatch, the odds of a quarter-point Fed hike in December were about 76.8% after the data. For the week, the 10-year fell 8 bp from 4.94% on Oct 30 and the 2-year 5 bp from 4.56%, still reflecting Thursday's rush into Treasuries during the stock rout.
WTI crudeUS$90.34/bbl−0.20%According to Yahoo Finance's front-month contract, down $0.18 from the previous NYMEX settlement of US$90.52 (the US$91.40 cited in yesterday's brief was a pre-settlement quote); no single reason for Friday's move was found. Down 13.23% for the week from US$104.12: on Nov 2 oil fell 7.36% after Iran said its supreme leader had authorized peace talks, and on Nov 4 it fell about 8% more as markets expected greater post-election pressure to end the war. Brent closed at US$97.76/bbl, down 16.90% for the week.
Gold (December futures)US$4,079.50/oz−0.83%According to Yahoo Finance, down $34.00 from the previous settlement of US$4,113.50 (the US$4,101.90 cited in yesterday's brief was an earlier quote). Strong jobs data lifted the dollar index 0.72% to 102.28 and pushed up Treasury yields, a headwind for gold, which pays no interest. Still up 4.63% for the week, as money moved into safe havens during Thursday's rout.

Its weekly drop was smaller than the TAIEX's but larger than the ADR's weekly loss of 7.56%. Volume on Nov 6 was 111,000 lots, 2 to 2.7 times each of the other four days. Hon Hai (Foxconn)NT$224.50−NT$21 (−8.55%)The world's largest electronics contract manufacturer and a major AI server assembler. Closed last Friday at NT$245.50, rose on Nov 2, then fell four days in a row; no company-specific news was found, and it followed AI server stocks lower. Nanya TechnologyNT$343.50−NT$111 (−24.42%)A DRAM memory maker and one of the week's biggest losers among large caps. Closed last Friday at NT$454.50; it fell NT$45.50 (−9.97%) on Nov 3 and NT$39.50 (−9.89%) on Nov 5, following the slump in US memory stocks: Micron fell 22.01% this week. Its weekly drop was twice the TAIEX's.
UnimicronNT$727−NT$262 (−26.49%)The leading maker of ABF substrates for AI chips. Closed last Friday at NT$989; it fell NT$95 on Nov 3, hit the daily limit on Nov 5 and fell another 9.12% on Nov 6. Substrates and PCBs are directly tied to data center construction and were the hardest-hit group as markets worried about slower AI data center building.
Delta ElectronicsNT$1,055−NT$280 (−20.97%)A power supply and cooling maker for which AI data center power has been a key growth area. Closed last Friday at NT$1,335, rose on Nov 2, then fell four days in a row; no company-specific news was found, and it followed AI power and cooling stocks lower.

Six Market Signals This week

TrendSharp drop

The TAIEX fell 12.19% this week and the TPEx index 17.89%; the TAIEX is about 20.3% below its October high. In the US, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq fell for a fourth straight week, with the Nasdaq about 10.94% below its high; the SOX fell for a fifth straight week before Friday's 4.21% rebound.

Money flowsForeign outflows

Foreign investors sold a net NT$524.38B this week, selling every day and topping NT$100B on three days; investment trusts bought NT$128.82B, a 19th straight day of buying, and 0050 volume grew day by day. The NT dollar weakened about 1.6% this week, past 33 per US dollar.

Interest ratesHike expectations

October payrolls rose 165,000, and the odds of a December Fed hike are about 76.8% (CNBC, citing CME FedWatch). The 10-year Treasury yield fell 8 bp this week to 4.86% but rose 2 bp on Friday on the strong jobs data. The Bank of England raised rates to 4% this week.

ConcentrationAI hardware slumps

Selling was concentrated in AI hardware: in Taiwan, Unimicron fell 26.49% this week, Nanya Technology 24.42% and Delta Electronics 20.97%, roughly twice the market's drop; TSMC fell 9.92% and Hon Hai 8.55%, holding up better than the market. In the US, Micron fell 22.01% for the week.

GeopoliticsPolicy risk

After the US midterm elections, markets worry that Congress and the states will take a tougher line on AI data centers. Hopes for US–Iran peace talks sent oil sharply lower. Taiwan's Executive Yuan told the Financial Supervisory Commission to respond; on Nov 6 the commission announced curbs on securities-lending short sales and higher short-sale margin, and the National Stabilization Fund said it does not rule out an extraordinary meeting.

InflationOil retreats

WTI crude fell 13.23% this week to $90.34 a barrel and Brent 16.90%, easing energy cost pressure. But US hourly wages rose 3.1% from a year earlier in October, above forecasts, so wage-driven inflation pressure remains; the October CPI on Nov 10 is the next data point to watch.

Regulator curbs securities-lending short sales and raises short-sale margin from Nov 9

After Taiwan's slump on Nov 6, the Financial Supervisory Commission announced (in Chinese) that from Nov 9: the daily cap on intraday securities-lending short-sale orders will fall from 30% to 3% of average volume over the previous 30 business days (brokers' hedging for warrants, ETF market making and similar needs is exempt); the minimum short-sale margin ratio for listed and OTC stocks will rise from 90% to 130%; and investors may post a wider range of collateral, such as foreign securities held through Taiwanese brokers. The commission also encouraged listed companies to consider share buybacks and hold investor briefings, and urged investors to respond rationally. Premier Cho Jung-tai had told the commission on Nov 6 to watch the market, and the National Stabilization Fund said it does not rule out an extraordinary meeting if declines become disorderly.

US & Global News

October payrolls rise 165,000, far above forecasts

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that nonfarm payrolls rose by 165,000 in October, against a forecast of just 59,000 in a Dow Jones survey cited by CNBC; August and September were revised up by a combined 84,000 or so, with September now at 60,000. The unemployment rate fell from 4.2% to 4.1%, and average hourly earnings rose 0.4% from the prior month and 3.1% from a year earlier, both above forecasts. Professional and business services (70,000) and health care (42,000) added the most jobs. However, the average duration of unemployment rose to 27.1 weeks, the longest since September 2021. The strong data raised expectations of a December Fed hike, lifting short-term Treasury yields and the dollar.

Chip stocks rebound but recover only about 30% of the previous day's loss

After the SOX fell 12.25% the day before, bargain hunters stepped in on Nov 6 and the index rose 4.21%: AMD gained 11.04%, Intel 7.71%, Micron 5.12% and Nvidia 2.78%, and chip equipment maker Lam Research rose 8.23% after announcing a $25 billion buyback. But the rebound recovered only about 30% of the previous day's drop, and the SOX still fell 12.15% for the week, its fifth straight weekly loss. The week's main theme: after the US midterm elections, markets worry that Congress and the states may restrict AI data center construction, and valuations of AI chip, memory and server stocks were sharply cut.

Michigan consumer sentiment rises to 51.0 as consumers worry about an AI bubble

The University of Michigan's preliminary November consumer sentiment index rose to 51.0, above October's 48.0 and the forecast of 47.5, though still a low reading. According to reports, more respondents worried about an AI bubble, but the cost of living remained their biggest concern. This week's sharp drop in oil eases consumers' energy costs.

Earnings: Airbnb and Cloudflare jump; DraftKings and Atlassian slump

Companies that reported after the previous close or before Friday's open saw sharply mixed reactions. Airbnb raised its revenue growth forecast and announced a buyback of up to $12 billion, rising 11.67%; Cloudflare's third-quarter revenue grew 39% from a year earlier, and its shares rose 9.91%. Sports betting company DraftKings fell 21.30% after a wider-than-expected loss and a lower profit outlook; software company Atlassian fell 16.15%, and law enforcement technology company Axon fell 18.18% after cutting its full-year outlook.

The US–Taiwan Link: US AI Hardware Stocks Correct, and Taiwan's Supply Chain Falls Harder

The common theme in US and Taiwan stocks this week was a reassessment of how fast US AI data centers will be built. Memory and AI chips fell the most in the US, and the corresponding Taiwan industries fell even more: Micron lost 22.01% this week and Nanya Technology 24.42%; substrates, PCBs, power and cooling for US data centers come mainly from Taiwanese suppliers, and Unimicron and Delta Electronics fell 26.49% and 20.97% for the week. TSMC, the largest stock in Taiwan's market, fell 9.92% this week, more than its ADR's 7.56% but less than the TAIEX's 12.19%.

The gap between the two markets was clearest on Friday: Taiwan's Nov 6 close reflected the previous night's US slump but not that night's US chip rebound. TSMC's ADR rose 6.33% on Friday, putting its converted price 16.45% above the Taiwan close, and TAIEX night futures rose 646 points to 40,298. Night futures and the ADR are prices set while Taiwan's market is closed; the actual move in Taiwan's cash market is set by Monday's 1:30 PM Taipei close.

Other links: strong US jobs data and rising Fed hike expectations strengthened the dollar, and the NT dollar weakened past 33 this week, with foreign outflows and the exchange rate affecting each other. Oil fell 13% this week, which relates to product prices for Taiwan's petrochemical industry and fuel costs for airlines and shipping companies.
